Jefferson County is located in the Eastern part of
the panhandle of West Virginia, and is named after
Thomas Jefferson. Bordered by the Potomac and
Shenandoah Rivers, and encompassing Harper’s Ferry,
Jefferson County is a county steeped in history.

year. The county experienced significant growth over
the past few decades and due to its prime location
near urban areas, it is expected to continue to grow
steadily.

schools, four intermediate schools, and one high
school, the facilities for the Jefferson County
schools are well maintained and kept up to date each
year with the newest technology.

The Jefferson Memorial Hospital is located in Ranson,
WV and provides emergency services and health care
to the area.
Communities
Jefferson County is about 58 miles from Washington
D.C. and about 67 miles from Baltimore, Maryland.
The towns of Charles Town, Harper’s Ferry, Bolivar,
Shepherdstown, and Ranson are all located in
Jefferson County.
Activities
There is an abundance of things to check out while
in Jefferson County West Virginia. One can explore the outdoors
and learn more about history at the same time at the
Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park. You can
hike, fish and visit museums and exhibits all at
Harper’s Ferry. Also learn more about important
battles of the Civil War at the Antietam National
Battlefield. Many people enjoy going to the Charles
Town Races and Slots. Watch thoroughbreds and dogs
year round and enjoy the over 4000 slots while you
visit the track. The track is also home to the
yearly, West Virginia Breeder’s Classic.
With the Appalachian Trail very close by, there is
also much to do in the outdoors. Take a charter boat
out on the river and enjoy fishing. Go hiking or
mountain biking through the many areas of forest.
You can even try kayaking, canoeing or white water
rafting. For those that enjoy golf, the Locust Hill
Golf club is located in Jefferson. In the winter,
you can also travel a short distance within the
state to enjoy some great snow skiing.
In keeping with the mountain tradition of the area,
the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce hosts each year
the West Virginia Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts
Festival which draws many visitors.
