Hampshire County WV

Hampshire County WV is the oldest county in the state of West Virginia with the oldest city, Romney, as its seat. Located along the Eastern panhandle of West Virginia near the Potomac Highland region. The best livestock in England came from Hampshire County in England. The story goes that when Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and owner of the Royal Land Grant, came upon several very fat, impressive pigs coming from the South Branch Potomac River Valley, he decided to name the American county for its British counterpart.

Economy

Historically, agriculture and farming gave Hampshire County its name and its economy. The tradition continues today with an abundance of fertile land, but with the addition of . Hampshire County WV continues to experience growth, and should continue to grow due to it’s location near more urban areas.

Schools

There are several primary schools, two middle schools and one high school in the Hampshire County school district. While it is a small district, the Hampshire County WV schools are wonderful schools with great teachers. Teachers, Administrators and parents come together in Hampshire County to ensure the academic success of their students.

Hospitals

The Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, provides emergency services and health care to the Hampshire county area.

Communities

The towns of Romney and Capon Springs are in Hampshire County. Hampshire County is very close to Frederick and Winchester, Virginia.

Activities

With so much natural beauty, you’ll want to check out all of the best spots. Ice can be found year round at Ice Mountain, known also as “Nature’s Icebox.” Due to weather conditions, plants and flora that are normally only found in frigid temps are found here. Guided tours are given on a scheduled basis, and special care should be given to all wildlife and plants while visiting the preserve.

A popular spot for spotting bald eagles, “the trough” is a narrow canyon on the South Branch of the Potomac River.  A three hour train ride on the Potomac Eagle offers stunning views of the river and its cliffs.

In addition to all the beautiful places to visit, Hampshire County WV also has many opportunities for outdoor exploration. Visit Hampshire Park, or the Nathaniel Mountain Hunting and Fishing park. You can even go horseback riding at one of the many stables in the area. Guided tours are available.
